Lonnie Chapin (born May 7, 1970; age 50) is an American songwriter, musician, and bassist. He was the bassist of Petra from 1996 to 2001. After leaving the band, he became the bassist of Tait from 2001 to 2004, along with his brother, drummer Chad Chapin.

Chapin was born in Klamath Falls, Oregon, but grew up in Salem and Bend. His father is a pastor, who encouraged Lonnie and his brother Chad to get involved in music from an early age. Chapin learned to play bass when he was young.

In 1988, Chapin graduated from Bend High School. He then went to Bethany Bible College in California, where he studied a major in ministry and a minor in music. In 1996, he and his brother moved to Nashville, Tennessee to find a career in the Christian music scene.

Three months after moving to Nashville, Chapin was invited to join Petra as their bass player. Shortly after that, the band released their second praise album, Petra Praise 2: We Need Jesus. The next year, the band released the album, God Fixation, which featured contributions from Chapin as both a bassist and a songwriter.

Chapin released one more album with Petra, Double Take. During his tenure, the band was nominated for two Grammys, winning one of them, as well as several Dove Awards. Also, in 2000 the band was inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame. Later that year, Chapin left the band.

After PetraEdit

After leaving Petra, Lonnie and his brother Chad joined the band Tait. They released two albums together, before the band went into indefinite hiatus in 2004. After that, he moved to California where he was music director at CLC.

In October 2009, Chapin and his wife moved back to Bend, Oregon. In January 2011, he began working as a morning show co-host on the station Clear 101.7. One year later, he helped start another station, Wild 107.7, where he co-hosts a morning show and works as assistant program director.

Chapin also has a cover band called Precious Byrd.
